Applying for a Police Officer Position

Submitting a Police Officer Application for Employment is the first step in becoming a Police Officer for the City of Big Spring.  Before applying for a position with the Big Spring Police Department, please be sure you meet the minimum qualifications and do not meet any of the listed disqualifications.  Police Officer Applications are NOT ACCEPTED unless there is a vacant position in the department.  Applications can be picked up in the Human Resources office located at 310 Nolan, Big Spring, Texas or can be downloaded from this website.

Please follow all the instructions in the application packet and make sure that the application is fully completed in ink.  Please initial each page of this packet to indicate that you have read and understand each page.  Pages that require notarization must be notarized BEFORE you return the application to the Human Resources office.  Applications must be submitted by the deadline listed.

Please note that the following information is REQUIRED with your application packet:

  • Photocopy of your high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
  • Sealed, original certified copy of your college transcript(s).  (No photo copy)
  • Photocopy of your college diploma.
  • Original, certified copy of your birth certificate.  (No photo copy)
  • Photocopy of your valid Texas driver’s license or of another State's driver license.  Applicants must possess a valid Texas driver license prior to being offered employment.
  • Photocopy of your Social Security card.
  • Photocopy of your Peace Officer Certificate from your police academy.
  • Photocopy of your Texas peace officer license and all training certificates.
  • Photocopy of your DD-214 Member 4 (long form), if you have been in the military.  Must possess an honorable discharge.
  • Photocopy of your NGB Form 22, if you have been in the National Guard.
  • Original, certified copy of your Naturalization papers, if applicable.  (No photo copy.)
  • Photocopy of your current proof of automobile liability insurance.

Your application is not complete until ALL the required documentation has been submitted.

The Human Resources office does not accept applications via fax or email.  If you are mailing your application, it must be postmarked no later than 5 p.m. on the posted deadline.  If there is not test date scheduled, please return your application as soon as possible to the Human Resources office.

Upon receipt, your application will be reviewed to determine if you qualify to take the written examination.  You will be notified of this decision by mail or telephone.  It is not necessary for you to contact the City of Big Spring regarding the status of your application after you have completed and returned your application.  If you are eligible to take the written examination you will be contacted.

After you have completed and submitted an application, you are required to inform the Human Resources office of any changes i.e. address, phone number, apolication with other departments, change in certification status, etc.  Failure to do so may result in disqualification of your application.

Employment decisions are made solely on the basis of qualifications to perform the work of a Police Officer. Qualifications include education, training, work experience and other factors which are relevant in determining job performance.  All information provided in the Police Officer application will be verified through schools, former employers, licensing/certification agencies or other sources if applicable.
