Mission

Within its annual operating budget, the Parks and Recreation Department is to operate the public’s parks and recreation facilities and to provide family-oriented recreational programming in an efficient and effective manner in order to contribute to the high quality of life of the citizens of Big Spring. The Parks Department provides improvements and upkeep for parks and ball field facilities available for the public's enjoyment. The Department strives to present aesthetically pleasing areas through the maintenance of playground and other recreational equipment, grounds maintenance, weed and litter control, and other landscaping activities.

Comanche Trail Park

Home of the spring that gave Big Spring its name, Comanche Trail Park features a 6,900-seat limestone amphitheater. Hike the the Rose Magers Trail and enjoy fishing or picnicking at Comanche Trail Lake. The Christmas Festival of Lights boasts more than one million lights displayed in park with more than 10,000 people attending event annually. The park is located on the south end of the city; access from U.S. 87 and from F.M. 700. View park map.

Big Spring State Park

Big Spring State Park is 381.99 acres located within the city limits of Big Spring in Howard County. Both city and park were named for a natural spring that was replaced by an artificial one. The park was deeded by the city of Big Spring in 1934 and 1935, and was opened in 1936. The park 382-acre park features dramatic views off of the 200-foot bluff and from the CCC-built loop road. At early morning or sunset, joggers, walkers and cyclists circle the loop, enjoying these views as they exercise. An elaborate Fourth of July fireworks display is one of the largest in the region.
